The Philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche By H. L. Mencken When this attempt to summarize and interpret the principal ideas of Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche was first published, in the early part of 1908, several of his most important books were yet to be translated into English and the existing commentaries were either fragmentary and confusing or frankly addressed to the specialist in philosophy. It was in an effort to make Nietzsche comprehensible to the general reader, at sea in German and unfamiliar with the technicalities of the seminaries, that the work was undertaken. It soon appeared that a considerable public had awaited that effort, for the first edition was quickly exhausted and there was an immediate demand for a special edition in England. The larger American edition which followed has since gone the way of its predecessor, and so the opportunity offers for a general revision, eliminating certain errors in the first draft and introducing facts and opinions brought forward by the publication of Dr. Oscar Levy's admirable complete edition of Nietzsche in English and by the appearance of several new and informative biographical studies, and a large number of discussions and criticisms. The whole of the section upon Nietzsche's intellectual origins has been rewritten, as has been the section on his critics, and new matter has been added to the biographical chapters. In addition, the middle portion of the book has been carefully revised, and a final chapter upon the study of Nietzsche, far more extensive than the original bibliographical note, has been appended. The effect of these changes, it is believed, has been to increase the usefulness of the book, not only to the reader who will go no further, but also to the reader who plans to proceed to Nietzsche's own writings and to the arguments of his principal critics and defenders.

The Philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche H L Mencken 9781545244616 Books Reviews
This is an abridged edition(print edition). The footnotes are missing. It looks like the footnotes are on the kindle edition, but not the print edition(I purchased both). The seller should describe this more truthfully. You can look in the text, page 90 for example and you see two references (16) & (17), but what they refer to are nowhere to be found in the print edition.
1. Had I known exactly how badly this book was produced and printed by the publisher I would never have purchased it. I understand now, after TRYING (struggling!) to read the book, why it was so cheap.
2. H.L. Mencken gives a thoughtful exposition of Nietzsche's basic tenants. But he fails completely in one, absolutely essential and critical, respect -- He equates Nietsche's "Will to Power" with Schopenhaur's "Will to Live." Nothing could be further from what Nietzsche intended!
3. I have spent approx. 40 years, on and off, attempting to understand what exactly Nietsche was trying to say -- the "vision" he was trying to communicate to others. I purchased this book to obtain Mencken's interpretation -- his "view" of Nietsche's meaning. In that sense, the content of the book fulfilled its purpose. However, there are better, much better, books delineating Nietzsche's ideas and tenents than this one.
I'm pleased to have this in my personal library.
Mencken makes Nietzsche clear and gives critical feedback.
An excellent book. So different in style from what he wrote later. His ability
to read and translate German comes from the heavily German sub-culture in
Baltimore. Only one flaw in this edition was the rewritten introduction. The
one in the original copy had the best definition of "existential" I have ever
read. Can't believe that the new version was written by him.
A useful digest of Nietzsche's Weltanschauung, especially valuable in the present American political climate.
An outstanding overview of the life and writing of Nietzsche. Mencken, of German descent, was able to read Nietzsche in the original German, thus his work along this line is more revealing than that of others who needed to rely on translations. This is one of the first overviews of Nietzsche ever published.
H.L. Mencken practically deifies Nietzsche, while, ripping Christian morality to shreds. One should read this work with an open mind. It's a perspective amongst many.
